Singing the Blues

B.B. King

This is where it all began for the legend of blues BB King.

Originally released in 1957, Singin’ The Blues only takes a few bars to establish King as the domineering electric guitarist, the incomparable music architect, the foothold on blues to come. These hits were recorded between 1951 and 1956, and include unforgettable tracks such as 'Woke Up This Morning,' 'Please Love Me' and 'You Upset Me Baby'.

Body And Soul must be a contender for that "finest album" spot

Body and Soul must be a contender for that "finest album" spot. It catches her at a time when the melodic invention and rhythmic suppleness of earlier days has given way to a more deliberate, almost speech-derived style which places greater emphasis on the lyric than on the harmonies.

Forbidden Fruit

Nina Simone

Forbidden Fruit

Nina Simone

When Nina Simone signed to colpix in 1959 she was granted complete creative control over her music.

This new freedom gave her the ability to explore new subject areas, particularly themes dealing with civil rights. Songs like 'Work Song' on 1961's Forbidden Fruit gave an inkling of the maelstrom that was to come, when she would become a veritable force to be reckoned with, making white audiences squirm in their seats with her harsh condemnation of american apartheid.

LoveLaws

TT

The solo debut from Warpaint's Theresa Wayman creates comfort and intimacy in a lonely, quiet place

While there’s certainly plenty here to please Warpaint fans, the album is so driven by Wayman’s personality, vivid lyricism and adventurous flair that it deserves to exist within its own realm.

With its crisp production and open-hearted approach, ‘LoveLaws’ is a record not only to be listened to from start to finish, but a ‘headphones’ album if ever there was one.

Confidently expressing vulnerability over woozy nocturnal soundscapes to create comfort and intimacy in a lonely, quiet place, ‘LoveLaws’ will be your fireside companion.

Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown

Sarah Vaughan

Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown

Sarah Vaughan

Like a gifted actress, Sarah Vaughan always makes lyrics come alive, whether on poignant ballads or buoyant pop novelties. Vaughan "plays" her voice as if it is a "real" instrument, and on this 1955 marvel, she is matched with musicians of an equally high caliber.

She shows her unbelievable bop-influenced creativity on "You're Not the Kind"; Brown's hard-swinging solo and Quinichette's Lester Young-styled softness set up an incredible ending cascade from Vaughan.

Pianist Jimmy Jones's beautiful chords on the infectious "He's My Guy" show why he was one of the most sought-after vocal accompanists, while Vaughan's phrasing, deliberately behind the time, adds perfectly to the relaxed feel. "April in Paris" reveals her operatic quality as Brown's tingling riffs fill in the space behind her.

Throughout, Sassy combines exquisite elegance, impressive range, and an effortless delivery.
