The Dark Knight (Soundtrack)

Hans Zimmer

It seems that The Dark Knight is everyone's favourite Batman. Whether it's Heath Ledger's legendary performance as the Joker, or Christian Bale's exceptional physical transformation, it's all there.

But this movie would not be what it is without Hans Zimmer's music. Strong, dark and epic, the composer offers us music that mirrors the personality of Batman and his torments, and it’s beautiful.

Nevermind

Nirvana

Nevermind raised groundbreaking Seattle grunge trio Nirvana to the status of godhead, forever changing the face of the pop music market.

Punk energy and aesthetic ("Territorial Pissings", "Drain You") are its lifeblood; pop melody, harmony, and structure ("Something In The Way", "Come As You Are) its selling points; Kurt Cobain's roaring guitars and subconscious intellect ("Smells Like Teen Spirit", "In Bloom") its heart and soul. Nobody had come up with an album like Nevermind before, because no one could conceive of an album like it.

OK Computer

Radiohead

OK Computer, Radiohead's third album, is the bombastic follow-up to 1995's sleeper hit The Bends, which left critics and listeners as impressed with the band's ability as they were curious about their potential.

In spite of its technological-sounding title and apocalyptic sci-fi themes, OK Computer is firmly grounded in the rock verities. Waves of guitars rage beneath the haunting melodies and near-hysterical fits of singer Thom Yorke. This complex, intense swarm of guitars is held aloft by a solid, inventive rhythm section and an impressive array of piano and keyboard textures. 'Paranoid Android' is a six-minute-plus epic with alternating time signatures, wild dynamic shifts, drama and adrenaline to spare. 'Let Down,' with its double-tracked vocals and rhythmic throb, may give a brief glimpse back at Radiohead's past, but at no point is OK Computer anything but a hurtle forward.

AM

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys’ fifth record is absolutely and unarguably the most incredible album of their career. It might also be the greatest record of the last decade

For now, we should celebrate this record for what it is – 41 minutes and 57 seconds of near perfection. Arctic Monkeys’ 5th studio album is a wickedly seductive record, draped in black leather that smells like cigarette and perfume. The band had spent years shapeshifting from pointed indie, to sun-stroked desert rock to whimsical psychedelic pop. It wasn’t until AM that they created a sound so assured and so spellbinding.

Folklore

Taylor Swift

A surprise album from the Queen Of Country Pop Taylor Swift emerges from lockdown with a 17 track album of intimate indie folktronica, produced by Aaron Dessner from the National.

Written by Taylor with Dessner, Justin Vernon, Jack Antonoff and the mysterious William Bowery, it's an understated masterpiece of stripped back acoustic electronica, reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens in places; the Autumn to the Summery tie-dye pop of Lover. It also features a duet with the very talented Bon Iver.

Lemonade

Beyoncé

While Lemonade is undeniably Beyonce's most vulnerable and personal album yet, it is also a collage of collaborative artistic effort.

Even more so than her last record, Queen B draws from every corner of popular music, new and old, to offer us a rich palette of songs. She also combines sounds and imagery from many eras to salute and pay homage to black life, invoking the antebellum South, Malcolm X, and the young victims of police brutality over the last three years. While the topics are heavy, the production feels soft like cotton.

Among her collaborators are Diplo, the Weeknd; Ezra Koenig, of Vampire Weekend; Jack White, The-Dream, Animal Collective, James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, and the Yeah Yeah Ye samples Soulja Boy and Led Zeppelin. Once again, the singer has compiled a long list of video directors to help execute the project, in addition to recruiting a number of actresses and friends to appear in the video (none of whom distract from the star for a moment). Beyonce is, and will continue to be the queen of Hip-Hop/ RnB.

Jay-Z

With his fifth album titled The BluePrint, New York rapper Jay-Z has crowned himself the king of rap music.

Laying the path for other MC's to follow, Jay-Z presents a lyrical masterpiece. Surrounded by some of the best beat makers (Jus Blaze, Timbaland), the artist elevated the rap game just like NAS and Biggie did previously. Jay-z sets it off with a clear and concise statement of his purpose, “the ruler's back”. He limits the guest appearances to just one when he collaborates with Eminem on “Renegade”. As always, classic material proves why Jay-Z retains his iconic status in the Hip-Hop world.

Relapse (2LP)

Eminem

After his 2004 album, Encore, Eminem went on a sudden self-imposed hibernation, popping up in TMZ reporting his supposed retirement from hip-hop. In October 2008, however, Eminem put the retirement reports to bed when he announced that he was working on a new album, titled Relapse, and promised it would be out in 2009. Hallelujah.

The album was released after a gap of 4 years since his last studio album Encore. During this gap, Eminem went to a drug rehab from sleeping pills, hence why the album cover is a picture of Eminem made of pills, and why the album is called Relapse. Long time collaborator Dr Dre produced most of the album, and 50 Cent is just one of the guests. Eminem’s Relapse won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and reached #1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Californication

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Do we even have to introduce this album? The haunting melodies of the songs present on Californication are now part of our collective culture, that’s just how important this album is.

After a series of unsatisfactory replacements, Californication - the band's seventh album, saw the band reunited with guitarist John Frusciante (out of a long heroin addiction) and producer Rick Rubin, whose blend of commercial acumen and sonic intelligence helped make the band successful. Californication is melancholic yet assertive, powerful and memorable. Frusciante's tight but lyrical playing in particular fits these songs like a second skin, giving them a kind of sensual ease that perfectly matches the carefree hedonism of their lyrics. The songs themselves are the same mix of adrenaline and high-voltage funk as always. Californication will resonate with you for a long time.

Back in Black

AC/DC

For many bands, the sudden and horrific death of their lead singer at the peak of their popularity would be a career-ender. AC/DC took a few weeks to regroup and then recorded one of the biggest albums of all time.

Back in Black is claimed in equal measure by the jocks, the stoners, the nerds, the delinquents, and the teachers. Nashville studios used it to test their acoustics. The title track boasts nothing less than one of the most gloriously elemental riffs ever devised—the perfection of the form, the ne plus ultra of jock jams, destined to be clumsily chunked out for eternity by teens testing fuzz pedals in God’s own Guitar Center.

Beyond the tens of millions of copies sold, it is easy to overlook the legacy of something like Back in Black. In a sense, the success of Back in Black helped predict the current reboot moment: Give the people what they want, but more. The music does not feel of any time or place; it means now what it meant then. The record’s ultimate legacy comes less from the artists it influenced or even the songs that remain staples of whatever is left of commercial rock radio than in its confirmation that evolution can be an overrated quality. And, as ever, AC/DC were their own best messengers for this simple idea, laid bare in the final moments of their most famous work: “Rock’n’roll ain't no riddle, man.”

On February 4th 1977, after a year of recording through hedonism, scandal and relationship break-ups the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac released their eleventh studio album, Rumours.

Although troubled with tension and setbacks the second time round combination of Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John and Christine Mcvie, together with the production talents of Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut had created the band's ultimate masterpiece.

The meteoric success of the album has been outstanding, with global sales of over 40 million records sold and numerous number ones across the world.

Rumours is the kind of album that transcends its origins and reputation, entering the realm of legend - it's an album that simply exists outside of criticism and outside of its time, even if it thoroughly captures its era.

Appetite for Destruction

Guns N’ Roses

The video for “Welcome to the Jungle,” Appetite for Destruction’s mission statement, mirrors the journey that an unsuspecting listener might take during their first spin through Guns N’ Roses’ 1987 debut.

Guns N' Roses' debut, Appetite for Destruction was a turning point for hard rock in the late '80s - it was a dirty, dangerous, and mean record in a time when heavy metal meant nothing but a good time.

Including explosive opener "Welcome to the Jungle" and the iconic "Sweet Child o' Mine," this vinyl captures the rebellious energy, gritty guitar riffs, and unforgettable anthems that made Guns N' Roses one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Led Zeppelin IV

Led Zeppelin

Recorded at Headley Grange in Hampshire, Island Studios in London and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, Led Zeppelin IV is the album that put Led Zeppelin into homes around the world, acting as a successful marriage of the hard rock from their second album with the folkier meanderings of their third.

It is an album that demonstrates their subtlety and restraint as much as their stadium-filling grandstanding and it confirmed their superstar rock status. The actually untitled album (it was also known as Four Symbols or The Runes Album), a chart-topper on both sides of the Atlantic, captures the group's schizophrenia perfectly. On the one hand, they wallop away through genre-defining rock standards such as 'Rock And Roll', 'Black Dog' and 'Misty Mountain Hop'; yet on the other, they are gentle and restrained on the folk mysticism of 'Going To California' and the Sandy Denny co-sung 'The Battle Of Evermore.' It is on their anthem, 'Stairway To Heaven', however, that both strands come together in perfect accord. Starting as a recorder-driven acoustic folk ballad, it culminates in its closing minutes as a full-on, much emulated rock classic, with Robert Plant's vocals and Jimmy Page's guitar both approaching career-bests. Led Zeppelin IV also demonstrates the singular talent that was drummer John Bonham - the blues driven 'When The Levee Breaks' is one of the most heavily sampled drum tracks of all time. With immaculate playing (multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones' contributions are not to be underestimated, either), a mystically obscure sleeve, and a remarkable range of tunes, Led Zeppelin IV, is still, for many, the best example of the group's craft.

Maybe this music by Prince & The Revolution will never quite sound as revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's artist-ic career.

The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). This album is a must if you want to hear a timeless and iconic piece.

Night At The Opera

Queen

A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by Queen, released in November 1975. Co-produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Queen, it was the most expensive album ever recorded at the time of its release.

A commercial success, A Night at the Opera has been voted by the public and cited by music publications as one of Queen's finest works. The awesomely daft and supremely catchy 'Bohemian Rhapsody' aside, it contains the almost equally risible excursions 'The Prophet's Song' and '39', a couple of the irresistibly amusing headbanger numbers that Queen could write in their sleep ('Death On Two Legs') and the very possibly heartfelt pop ballad 'You're My Best Friend'. Immortally baffling, like the pyramids. Yet also enjoyably compelling.

Pet Sounds

The Beach Boys

The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s.

The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more.

It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a rock record.

Bizarre Ride II (25th Anniversary Edition)

The Pharcyde

Kanye West's favourite hip hop albums of all time, now at £60 off RRP until stocks last

Critically acclaimed as an absolute classic of the alternative hip-hop genre, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde has shipped over a million units worldwide and garnered the group justifiable comparisons to De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.

The very definition of a crossover record, outlets ranging from Pitchfork to The Source have hailed it as one of the greatest albums ever made. NME calls it “… a cartoon-strip of blunt-smoking antics, sexual innuendo and unashamed political incorrectness, crammed with infectious beats.”

Listening to “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” 25 years after its release, its sense of timeliness is unmistakable. Every song on the album inverts a hoary hip-hop cliché. With classics like ‘Oh Shit,’ ‘Otha Fish’, ‘Ya’ Mama,’ and the now-ubiquitous US No 1 hit ‘Passin’ Me By,’ this boxset remains essential and enduringly unique – a rite of passage for any serious Hip-Hop head.

Enter the 36 Chambers

Wu Tang Clan

Classic debut album by the legendary hip hop collective, originally released in 1993. The gritty, distinctive sound of 'Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)' created a blueprint for hardcore hip-hop during the 1990s, and helped return New York City hip-hop to national prominence. The album features the singles 'Protect Ya Neck', 'Method Man', 'C.R.E.A.M.' and 'Can It Be All So Simple'. Released: February 22, 1994

Along with Dr. Dre's The Chronic, the Wu-Tang Clan's debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), was one of the most influential rap albums of the '90s. Its spare yet atmospheric production - courtesy of RZA - mapped out the sonic blueprint that countless other hardcore rappers would follow for years to come. It laid the groundwork for the rebirth of New York hip-hop in the hardcore age, paving the way for everybody from Biggie and Jay-Z to Nas and Mobb Deep. Moreover, it introduced a colorful cast of hugely talented MCs, some of whom ranked among the best and most unique individual rappers of the decade. Some were outsized, theatrical personalities, others were cerebral storytellers and lyrical technicians, but each had his own distinctive style, which made for an album of tremendous variety and consistency.

Emergency on Planet Earth

Jamiroquai

Jamiroquai's debut album Emergency On Planet Earth became an instant classic upon it's release back in 1993. Entering the charts at number 1, it laid the foundations for an acid-jazz sound that the band would continue to build upon for the next decade and a half. Fronted by vocalist Jason Kay, also known as JK, the album was an infectious, funk mezze of trumpets, saxophones, didgeridoos and flutes, spawning the hit singles Too Young To Die and Blow Your Mind which both entered the UK top10 in 1993.

The debut studio album by English funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai was released on 14 June 1993 under Sony Soho Square. Prior its release, the band debuted in 1992 with "When You Gonna Learn" under Acid Jazz Records, and front-man Jay Kay was given a major-label deal with Sony Music. The album was produced as Kay formed the band and is characterised by its acid jazz foundations, layers of instrumentation and socially charged lyrics.

Illmatic

Nas

If an MC's history were really more important than his skills, then anyone from the projects would be able to rhyme like Nas, and Nas would be no different from any bum riding down Broadway.

Illmatic is a milestone in hip-hop, an undisputed classic that is held on a pedestal to this day. Though there are many albums with greater highs, you’d be hard pressed to find one with fewer flaws. It captures a cultural scene so poignantly to achieve a timeless status that only a few albums hold alongside it.

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath's debut album is the birth of heavy metal as we now know it.

'Black Sabbath' is the eponymous debut studio album by Black Sabbath. Released in 1970, Black Sabbath's debut album is the birth of heavy metal as we now know it. Compatriots like Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple were already setting new standards for volume and heaviness in the realms of psychedelia, blues-rock, and prog rock.

Yet of these metal pioneers, Sabbath are the only one whose sound today remains instantly recognizable as heavy metal, even after decades of evolution in the genre. Circumstance certainly played some role in the birth of this musical revolution - the sonic ugliness reflecting the bleak industrial nightmare of Birmingham; guitarist Tony Iommi's loss of two fingertips, which required him to play slower and to slacken the strings by tuning his guitar down, thus creating Sabbath's signature style.

These qualities set the band apart, but they weren't wholly why this debut album transcends its clear roots in blues-rock and psychedelia to become something more.LP - 180 Gram Vinyl with CD Version.

I Should Coco

Supergrass

Supergrass released their debut album, I Should Coco in 1995. This energetic and eclectic record features an array of rock sub-genres from Brit pop to punk to ska to a dash of trippy psychedelia.

Guitarist and vocalist Gaz Coombes played in the group The Jennifers with drummer Danny Goffey when both were in their mid teens. This group began to gain local notoriety around Oxford, England and they recorded a 1992 live demo to sell at shows. The Jennifers disbanded in 1993 as some members went on to university and Coombes formed Theodore Supergrass with Goffey bassist Mick Quinn. In mid-1994 the group’s name was shortened to simply Supergrass and they signed with Backbeat Records and issued their debut single, “Caught by the Fuzz”, which achieved the rare feat of being both NME and Melody Maker’s “Single Of The Week” status during the same week.

I Should Coco was recorded throughout much of 1994 with producer Sam Williams. Many of these sessions were specifically to record advance singles (three were released before the album), while the rest was captured during frenzied studio performances as the group wanted to catch the energy and excitement of the songs on tape.

Soul Mining

The The

soul mining is very much of its time, with the anti-thatcher rally cries and drum machines that were lifted from the human league's studio. at the same time, it's like absolutely nothing else from 1983. johnson's peers were either gleefully wallowing in synth pop or turning into vampires. only johnson, perhaps because he has always been a little out of his mind, chose to walk that line between accessible pop (which also meant risking critical scorn) and high art.

Originally released in 1983, 'Soul Mining' is the major label debut album by post-punk outfit The The, fronted by Matt Johnson. Featuring the singles 'Uncertain Smile', 'Perfect', and the iconic 'This Is The Day', the album, which is Gold-certified in the UK, has been long out of print on vinyl, except as part of a limited run 30th anniversary 2 LP box set reissue in 2014. Featuring a host of talented musicians, including JG Thirwell (aka Foetus, Manorexia and Steroid Maximus), Zeke Manyika (Orange Juice), electronic DIY pioneer Thomas Leer and Jools Holland, Matt Johnson set out with a clear vision in mind - to produce an album that felt cinematic; a record of width, depth and texture and one which avoided the mundane line-up of two guitars, bass and drums. Lauded with critical acclaim ('Soul Mining is a brilliant and very idiosyncratic album' - The Guardian ; 'Like shaving lotion applied to cleanse a wound, Johnson's songs are attractively scented and sting like hell' - Melody Maker) the music and lyrics of 'Soul Mining' are as fresh and relevant today as they were almost 40 years ago.
