Along with Dr. Dre's The Chronic, the Wu-Tang Clan's debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), was one of the most influential rap albums of the '90s. Its spare yet atmospheric production - courtesy of RZA - mapped out the sonic blueprint that countless other hardcore rappers would follow for years to come. It laid the groundwork for the rebirth of New York hip-hop in the hardcore age, paving the way for everybody from Biggie and Jay-Z to Nas and Mobb Deep. Moreover, it introduced a colorful cast of hugely talented MCs, some of whom ranked among the best and most unique individual rappers of the decade. Some were outsized, theatrical personalities, others were cerebral storytellers and lyrical technicians, but each had his own distinctive style, which made for an album of tremendous variety and consistency.

On the 6 excels best when it embraces its composite pop ethos as heard on the electronica and Latin pop fusion of “Waiting for Tonight” or the quirky coalescence of bossa nova accents and light hip-hop rhythms on “Open Off My Love.”

 

On the 6 is the debut studio album by American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez. It was released on June 1, 1999, by the Work Group. Lopez worked with several producers on the album, including Rodney Jerkins, Cory Rooney, Dan Shea and her boyfriend at the time, rapper and record producer Sean "Puffy" Combs.

 

A Spanish edition of the album was released on November 24, 1999. This version of the album shuffles the track list, omits "Feelin' So Good" as well as the English version of "Waiting For Tonight", while including an all-new Spanish track ("Es Amor"), in addition to Spanish versions of "Open Off My Love" ("El Deseo De Tu Amor"), "Promise Me You'll Try" ("Amar es Para Siempre") and "Waiting For Tonight" ("Una Noche Mas") - the latter of which also appeared on the album's original release as a bonus track. The remainder of the tracks on this edition appear as they did on the album's original release. 

 

Critics greeted Lopez's musical debut with a generally positive response. On the 6 was praised for its conservative, though dynamic, musical style and combination of Latin with pop and R&B. Critics commented on Lopez's vocal ability and many generally gave good remarks for her versatility and somewhat "seductive" and "sultry" singing, however, some critics found the vocals quite underwhelming. The album was successful on the charts, reaching the top ten or top twenty in the United States and several other countries around the world. On the 6 went on to sell three million copies in the US, being certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and an additional three million copies worldwide.

Jamiroquai's debut album Emergency On Planet Earth became an instant classic upon it's release back in 1993. Entering the charts at number 1, it laid the foundations for an acid-jazz sound that the band would continue to build upon for the next decade and a half. Fronted by vocalist Jason Kay, also known as JK, the album was an infectious, funk mezze of trumpets, saxophones, didgeridoos and flutes, spawning the hit singles Too Young To Die and Blow Your Mind which both entered the UK top10 in 1993.

The debut studio album by English funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai was released on 14 June 1993 under Sony Soho Square. Prior its release, the band debuted in 1992 with "When You Gonna Learn" under Acid Jazz Records, and front-man Jay Kay was given a major-label deal with Sony Music. The album was produced as Kay formed the band and is characterised by its acid jazz foundations, layers of instrumentation and socially charged lyrics.

Compatriots like Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple were already setting new standards for volume and heaviness in the realms of psychedelia, blues-rock, and prog rock. 

 

Yet of these metal pioneers, Sabbath are the only one whose sound today remains instantly recognizable as heavy metal, even after decades of evolution in the genre. Circumstance certainly played some role in the birth of this musical revolution - the sonic ugliness reflecting the bleak industrial nightmare of Birmingham; guitarist Tony Iommi's loss of two fingertips, which required him to play slower and to slacken the strings by tuning his guitar down, thus creating Sabbath's signature style.

 

These qualities set the band apart, but they weren't wholly why this debut album transcends its clear roots in blues-rock and psychedelia to become something more.LP - 180 Gram Vinyl with CD Version.

Supergrass released their debut album, I Should Coco in 1995. This energetic and eclectic record features an array of rock sub-genres from Brit pop to punk to ska to a dash of trippy psychedelia.

Guitarist and vocalist Gaz Coombes played in the group The Jennifers with drummer Danny Goffey when both were in their mid teens. This group began to gain local notoriety around Oxford, England and they recorded a 1992 live demo to sell at shows. The Jennifers disbanded in 1993 as some members went on to university and Coombes formed Theodore Supergrass with Goffey bassist Mick Quinn. In mid-1994 the group’s name was shortened to simply Supergrass and they signed with Backbeat Records and issued their debut single, “Caught by the Fuzz”, which achieved the rare feat of being both NME and Melody Maker’s “Single Of The Week” status during the same week.

I Should Coco was recorded throughout much of 1994 with producer Sam Williams. Many of these sessions were specifically to record advance singles (three were released before the album), while the rest was captured during frenzied studio performances as the group wanted to catch the energy and excitement of the songs on tape.

In the hierarchy of UK punk rock debuts, Damned Damned Damned ranks behind only Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols and The Clash in terms of its impact on the music world.

 

The album kicks off with “Neat Neat Neat”, the band’s second single and one of punk’s classic tracks. The three-word song title whizzes by like the Roadrunner’s “meep-meep!” as it zips away from the Coyote. Blink, and the prize is gone. Fortunately, with a CD, you can just play the song again. It’s just as good the second time, or the 1,000th. 

 

The album also features the even more addictive, tom-tom-driven “New Rose”. Released in November 1976, it is said to be UK punk’s first single. What a way for the genre to begin! While both of those tracks are high-speed poppy punk, the Damned were branching out even on their debut. “Fan Club” is mid-tempo and driven by surf motifs. The slow, dark, and druggy “Feel the Pain” presages the group’s later excursions into art-pop, new wave, and goth. 

 

The album’s final track, the bluesy garage-rockin’ “I Feel Alright”, is a cover of the Stooge’s song, acknowledging the genre’s forefathers. Mostly, though, Damned Damned Damned is full-throttle punk rock, with three tracks clocking in under two minutes. Even the 60-second “Stab Your Back” is more than a throwaway, though. It’s exciting, threatening, and, in a really dumb way, pretty catchy. Another of the short cuts, “Fish”, actually features a guitar solo, one of the elements of arena rock bloatedness that punk rock sought to undermine. Right away, the Damned were clearly mavericks, unwilling to play by even the rules of a scene that supposedly had no rules. The band’s weird personality shines through on this album, helping to elevate Damned Damned Damned from very goodness to total excellence.
